Exploring Seoul is exciting, but navigating its public transportation can feel overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time. Don’t worry! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about Seoul’s buses: how to buy tickets, make transfers, and ride like a pro. Let’s dive in and make your journey around Seoul smooth and stress-free!

How to Buy Bus Tickets in Seoul

  1. Using a T-money Card
The easiest way to pay for bus rides in Seoul is by using a T-money card. You can buy these rechargeable cards at any convenience store (like CU, 7-Eleven, or GS25) or subway station. Usually, the cards are not displayed, instead, the cashier has them on the counter or in their cash register. So simply approach the counter, and ask for it. After purchasing, recharge it with money at a convenience store or subway ticket machine.
    • Steps to use T-money:
      • When you board the bus, tap the card on the card reader next to the driver.
      • When you exit, tap the card again on the reader at the back door to complete the transaction.
  2. Paying by Credit Card
Some international credit cards (with contactless payment capability) may also be used to pay directly when boarding. Just tap the card on the reader like you would with a T-money card. However, not all cards are accepted, so it’s recommended to check in advance.
  3. Cash Payment
If you don’t have a T-money card, you can still pay with cash. However, this is less convenient, as exact change is required. Simply give the cash to the driver or drop it into the fare box next to them when boarding.

How to Transfer Between Buses and Subway

Seoul offers a convenient transfer system between buses and the subway when you use a T-money card. Transfers are free or discounted if done within 30 minutes (or 60 minutes during late-night hours).

Steps for transferring:

  • Between buses: Tap your T-money card when you exit the first bus. Then, tap again when you board the second bus.
  • Between subway and bus: Tap your card when you exit the subway, then tap again when you board the bus (or vice versa).

Note: You can transfer up to four times (5 different modes of transportation) in one journey, but the transfer time limit applies.

How to Ride a Bus in Seoul

  1. Find Your Bus Stop
Bus stops in Seoul are marked with signs that show the bus numbers that stop there. You can find bus stop information using apps like Google Maps or KakaoMap. Look for the bus stop ID or the bus numbers.
  2. Boarding the Bus
When the bus arrives, check the bus number displayed on the front or side of the bus. Enter through the front door and either tap your T-money card on the reader or pay the fare with cash.
  3. During the Ride
Once inside, hold onto the handrails or sit down. Some buses in Seoul can be crowded, so be prepared to stand. The bus will announce the next stops in Korean, but some buses also have English announcements.
  4. Getting Off the Bus
Press the stop button (usually on the handrails) to let the driver know you want to get off at the next stop. As the bus approaches your stop, move toward the back door and tap your T-money card on the reader as you exit.
